Bill and Dawn Williamson came to Sonoma County in the early 1990s, but they both grew up in Australia, where Bill spent his summers out in the family vineyards. Bill didn’t return to the wine business until later in life, after a successful entrepreneurial career in the software industry that took him from Sydney to California’s Silicon Valley. There was never a time, he will assure you, when he didn’t love wine. In fact, he saw all the business travel as a great opportunity to train his palate.
It’s knowledge he’s happy to share. The focus of the tasting experience at Williamson Wines is on finding simple and elegant ways to heighten your enjoyment of wine, and there is a nice array of wines to sample—everything from an easy and approachable Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon to Chardonnay, a sparkling wine, and a Shiraz. Every wine they have ever released has won a medal, despite the fact that with a small case production Bill and Dawn prefer not to enter many of the industry’s biggest (and more expensive) wine contests. The wines are in the $30 to $125 range, and you can either stop by for a casual tasting at the bar or you can make an appointment for one of Bill’s special “epicurean” dinners, where you’ll get the chance to taste the Williamson wines over dinner in the company of a local star chef and the winemaker (around $150 per person). If you’re looking for a big splurge and want to visit the wine country like a millionaire, ask about Bill’s helicopter tasting tours, which are a completely unique perspective on the valley.
